I have similiar issues as im generally going down the bottom research path (the metal casting / machinery / guilds) when war mongering.
One of my solutions have been careful micro on the cottage front (in other words making sure cottage tiles are being worked) to generate cash whilst raking...
The standard maps (continents, normal speed etc.)
Usually by the time my cannons start hitting the scene i will have purged my continent of all other civs and then i will be frantically trying to get astromony inorder to ship my army to fresh territory.
At times the biggest hindrance to my...
It's worth pointing out that i am avid war monger and very very expansive.
Most peoples cities on a commerce scale are usually the equivalent of 2-3 of mine. I just happen to have that many mainly to get a lock on territory and resources.
Its not unusual for me to run on 0% science (once i...
Thank you for explaining the option on drawing.
Personally i am using the new sign function to indicate future city sites and this is saving me using graph paper and counting squares which is what i have previously been doing.
Now theres a great huge blue marker with "here" plastered on it...
Usually around 15 and accelerating.
1000 AD is normally the point where i have roughly double the number of cities of the highest scoring ai.
1500 AD is typically when my muskets and grenadiers make an appearence...
Workshops are the key to getting an average of 2 production per tile for the mid to late game. One workshop on a plains makes it the near equivalent to a mine so one biology level farm and one plains workshop averages 2 production per tile. Likewise 2 workshops on grasslands and one biology...
As a general rule for a city to become self funding at 80% research rate you need roughly 8 or more cottages (this assumes you build all the commerce bonus buildings so you are making about 10 gold before the bonus takes it to 20)
Eight or more cottages tends to produce about 50+ commerce...
Its worth noting most of my experience of using specialists in preference or in support of cottage spams comes from going for conquest and domination wins.
As it implies momentum is everything which is why waiting around for cottages to mature is so deterimental to early expansion...
The usual response to anyone bringing up money issues is cottage spam cottage spam...
For those of us that like to land grab in order to secure a good base from which to go for tech wins and to deny or gain resources (or warmongers seeking territory gains) cottage spamming simply does not...
im just curious whether anyone uses chariots at all or just wait for horsemen...
it might be worth considering if youve got close neighbours and you want some breathing room
a pop 5 city with a barracks and tile improvements (temple and 2 garrison) can crank em out fast and the ai has...
move great leader into city with a barracks and an option on the great leader display will allow you to create an army
after its created simply move a unit into square with army and use the load option on that units display (you dont have to have the army in a city to load)
personally i...
ho hum, guess im a real war monger then cause my typical build order is barracks/archer/settler (i play zulus so i start with archers)
once the new settler trundles away i start attacking with the archer (building new ones whilst pop increases for next settler)
usually ive destroyed 2-3...
there is a way to track which units have created gl's if you can bothered
if you have a stack about to attack then unfortify one of your city defenders then fortify all your attacking units in the stack
then unfortify and attack one unit at a time
if it produces a great leader then you...
and then you get the other extreme
start of game, built barracks then archer then granary then settler
sent the archer out whilst making another unit and the new city was making a granary
ran into barb hut and archer became elite
ran into oppossing civs warrior that was scouting...
the recent version where pop rushing means unhappy for 40 turns etc...
sure you got a problem with excessive rushing but the key is to grab luxaries as soon as possible (colonies till you get a border extended to cover it), max out on military police and have all the happyiness improvements...
