Dianthus: brilliant - I'd tried changing the 'allow domination victory' and 'allow conquest victory' settings, to no effect. /goes home, plays till the early hours :)

Thanks for the quick and friendly responses guys. I'll try the 'elimination mode' suggestion.

Hello everyone, total newbie question here I'm sure. I'm used to Civ 1 or 2 where the loss of a city in war is unfortunate, but not game-ending. Every time I play 3, I sooner or later lose a city and get the message 'you have suffered a humiliating conquest defeat' - and game over...
