Have you changed from despotism? Monarchy has a little better corruption, Republic is even better. It depends on my goals. If I'm warmongering, monarchy is better, but for building and researching, Republic is better. Make sure you connect your cities by roads, don't build them too tightly...

I'm playing an archipelago and I'm stuck on a small island by myself. The arabs have yet to get map making, so they can't reach me at all, unless they send over a million currahs, which can't carry anyone anyway. "Give me Map Making or I will taunt you a second time!"

OK, sorry for posting so many screenshots, but my luck went completely the other direction this time. I started a new game, and look at my starting location now! That's 4 bonus foods and 2 other bonuses at first, then at least 7 food bonuses once I expand. Wow.. just.. wow..
