Actually, some ships function as artillery. Many ships that have no unit capacity can bombard coastal cities (like the battleship, for instance). Just like siege units, if you park them next to a city, they will gradually decrease the city's defense. This only works on coastal cities, though.

I am actually already aware of this. I just like to pretend they do know. It adds to the overall realism. Wouldn't you agree?

Basically, strike a balance between making the other civilizations fear you and maintaining good relations with them. This can be very difficult, however, as many civilizations will often ask you to stop trading with another and/or declare war on them.

33. In Civilization, you actually get to use the diabolical strategy of making every civilization go to war with every other civilization except yours, then working on research and city defenses. In theory, they would all be too distracted to stop you.
