i love using workshops, esp on plains. caste system (normally the second civ you get after slavery) +1 hammer (2h now), plus guilds (+1, 3h now), plus chemisty (+1, now 4h) and SP civ (+1F, +1Hammer). pretty helpful when balancing a military city and other cities that need production. 4 tiles...
