I keep everything ramped down as far as it'll go, *and* I play in Strategic View. It certainly isn't pretty, but it runs smoothly, and that's just the way I like it.
Lately, the main Civ videos I've been watching are FilthyRobot's NQ multiplayer games, I enjoy watching and listening to him work out his process turn by turn.
The other videos I watch fairly regularly are xSubTownerx's LPs, for much the same reason.
My last game (emperor Venice OCC, small archipelago) finished at turn 372 (diplomatic victory for yours truly), but I played on until around turn 480.
Two of the other civs denounced me about 2/3s of the way through the game, so I just sat back to see if they'd DoW me. I was dead last in...
I've gotta second the Pathfinder as my favorite early unit, for all the reasons listed above. Warrior-strength scout that upgrades to a Comp Bow? Yes please. The fact you can choose your ruin reward is just icing on the cake.
As for a least favorite... can't say I have one, but I've never...
