This thread may have gone off in a different direction but in regards to the OP I think that chess programs are so strong because it is relatively easy to evaluate a board position. This allows the program to choose the best out of a large number of possible moves, predict opponent responses...

Your right. Completely unfriendly to new users who don't know what the icons mean. Instead of modding it with code, maybe someone could write text directly onto the images for a temporary solution?
I just purchased the game and spent a bit of time browsing through the civilopedia. I had trouble with the forward and back buttons on the bottom left. If I chose a category from the list on the right, then hit "back", then chose the same category from the list, the interface does not respond...
I haven't received the game so excuss me for any ignorance but does anyone plan on modding the civilopedia to make it better? I've read a lot of complaints about it (not sure if their justified though).
They definitely have to draw the line somewhere and cannot always cater to the lowest common denominator. I mean that computer could be a decade old. I do not agree with the original poster whatsoever.

In the manual under Population Roster it says that citizens can be happy, content, unhappy or very unhappy. What's very unhappy for? It looks like there are graphics for it in the people.gif too.
