Good point. I seems like the design spec for all included civilizations and religions is probably something along the lines of "those that have withstood the test of time..." Forget about America and Germany, though--including them doesn't follow this reasoning.

I thought that Japanese Shinto was a composite religion that was created by pre WWII Japan government to solidify Japanese nationalism. While Shinto does draw on classical Japanese mythology, Japan has historically adhered more to Buddist denominations.
