I had the same problem. I think the following fixed it:
I search for every *.ttf file in the civ4 directory and copied them into the windows fonts directory in the system control.
I am also thinking about playing civ4 on such a laptop. What resolution are you playing on? How good is the performance later in the game, around 1900 or 2000 or with the whole worldmap revealed?

Were you able to install those mods together? Some files conflicted here. Maybe you can put up a modpack with all of them, i.e. your CustomAssets folder?
