Thanks to both of you. The black borders still remain, but the shutting down has finally stopped. I tested it in a game of the Age of Ice scenario (which I failed miserably), and it didn't shut down at all until I turned it off at 2 hours. Once again, thanks :D

Do I have to save changes after I make them, or can I just leave the window open and keep opening civ to see if something changed?

When I download the driver, it says it's not validated for my computer even though I'm positive I picked the right version (Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit)

There is no error message when this happens. Yes, I believe Directx is installed. The graphics card is a Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family (according to the dxdiag)

I no longer have any problem with the 3.17 patch because I installed it from the Firaxis site instead of CivFanatics, but the black border problem and game crashing/recovering problem remains. Instead of an error message, the game just freezes, flashes, goes completely black for a few seconds...

Reinstalling BtS didn't do anything at all >_>

Thank you very much for the link, and this time, I am sure I have the right model and right drivers to install. I'm just not sure which one I should install. I tried one video driver and unzipped it to the video subfolder in the driver folder, but it really didn't help my problem. EDIT: Link...

Never mind, unzipping of the patch won't work, and I still can't find a driver that will work. I've been searching for a while, selecting the one driver that I was sure would install, but none of them are compatible.

Alright, the unzipping now works (I think), but I can't find a good driver to DL. I found a graphics driver by searching on google, but it exited mid-download. The black border thing also occurred outside of the game, so now it's really annoying...

Agh, another problem: when I'm just playing a regular BtS game without the patch, it shuts down for a second, and then re-opens with the edges gone in favor of black borders. It also shuts down and re-opens periodically after this incident. When I turned off the game, turned off the computer...

Okay, I fixed what was wrong with my game by installing patches of the previous game, but now I have a new problem. When I try and unzip the 3.17 patch to the BtS folder--or anywhere, really--an error pops up saying it cannot unzip to the location. What's wrong?
