As a long time tw player i must say - Rome with latest expansion is a realy good game to start. And CA finally did a good job bugfixing/optimazing it with 1.5/1.6 patches. You may try also Medieval: Total War, once a great addition to the series, but with VERY outdated graphics as for now...
