If your goal is resisting the general perception of police as trustworthy authority figures rather than, for example, trying to ascertain whether or not the accused is guilty, then that's not really a noble goal.

In the absence of omniscience it has to come down to an opinion. Is the opinion of 12 randomly-selected peers less valid than the opinion of one judge? Do we have complete and utter faith in the infalibility and lack of bias of the criminal justice system now? I'm sure it's not a perfect system...
