Quick fun, nice job This reminds me of playing civ when I was a kid, I didn't know how to build cities or enter the city screen to change units being built. I just played the game as is with only the units I got from villages. :)

Winning the game on emperor is pretty difficult, it involves a heavy expansion strategy in the BCs, under depotism expand to at least 20 cities, research as quickly as possible to get republic or democracy, then shoot for religion to build J.Bachs Cathedral. From there the game is all down hill...

I would sometimes let barbarians take over a few of my cities and take them back for fun :)

Sometimes on king difficulty I would launch at 1380AD, and it wouldn't arrive at all, 10 years, 15, 20, 50 years later it wouldn't arrive, strange...

Diddo on making the suez canal, I've never tried the sentry-move trick with transports. Will it work with versions 4, 5, and newer?

I played the game when I was a little boy around age 7 since 1991, I didn't understand the game completely (government switching, tech trees, city walls, building settlers) until about 1 or 2 years later, but I was playing it all the way until 1996 when civ2 came out.

Keep the government as a democracy or republic, research technology and improve cities. If need be to conquer cities, simply use a diplomat to subvert or bribe a cities, it will gain you the cities and allow you to declare war on the enemy civilization. In addition, at king or emperor level...

Build up the same improvement and sell it over and over again, have it build military units, or don't change the building after it is built, then let shields accumulate, then the accumulated shields can be used for any new building/unit/wonder/space ship module when new technology is discovered.
