Congratulations! Great finish date. I don't spend 190 hours a year playing Civ IV (well, maybe), so I'm in awe when any of you complete this gauntlet.

Why learn to play a game the wrong way? I was "forced" to as I bought each expansion as it came out, but in retrospect I wish it had been BtS the whole way. There is no reason to subject yourself to an inferior version when a superior one is available. It would be like watching Six Samurai or...

Just to add a bit more pedantry to this discussion, a "ball on a chain" is technically a flail. A mace is just a weighted club.

The Complete Edition is the only way to go. Even at $15, it's worth it - just look at the forum activity for a 10 year-old game. Beyond the Sword is the expansion 90+% of people play as it has the best mechanics and support. Don't bother starting out playing the base game - jump right into BtS.

The event log is the quickest and easiest way (not sure if that's in the base game, though, as I only use BUFFY/BAT/Whatever). I do the same thing, but I try to amuse myself with the names: One Horse Town (never had a Two Horse Town), Fort Knox (multiple golds), Castle Black (Tundra/Ice)...

Using a spreadsheet to calculate something with information freely available in the game is no different than a mod telling you that Athens will become unhappy next turn.
