In MP, most good players focus on expansion and military. This comes at the expense of building Wonders, as you only have so many shields :). I'm guessing that most of your opponents were planting cities like crazy.

Make sure you have port 2056 open on your firewall and forwarded to your ip by your router. Also, restarting Civ and holding down the Shift key while the game loads can help alleviate bad peer issues. Doing this will clear the cache.

Yes, this exploit has been gone for a long time now, don't remember when exactly the fix came.

If the game goes out of sync, all you need to do is find the player or players with the different sync numbers, have them quit the game and rejoin from the lobby and you will fix the problem.

If you're loading it in the GameSpy lobby, the game won't be marked as "new" any more. Your friend can sort the list by name or map to easily find your game, or he can connect through Direct IP to your IP address.
