You may want to consider the tile that your opponent is sitting on. If it's a resource square, the defense factor greatly increases.

The Chinese - by far the worst. I don't know why. In my experience, they either wind up on a resource-rich continent all by themselves and win via space race, or I discover their civ early on in the game and they become immediately belligerent.
