I got mine in calgary from futureshop, no manual, just the pdfs... i tell you it really sucks to print it out due to the fact that even at 2 pages per sheet of paper, you are still looking at 130 printed pages...
VNC (http://www.realvnc.com) is also alot like RDP, but will occasionally give better results for remote viewing of a computer, especially if they are on a fast link... just don't expect much more than a frame a second, or maybe a frame every 3 seconds :)
The bar is the hit points bar, you can turn it on in the options somewhere.
Basically you will have to sacrifice lots of catapults/artillery versus that city, counting on lots of collatoral damage to make taking that city a reality... of course bombard the city with...
epic lasts quite a bit longer than normal, all things take longer to do basically, techs take longer to discover, wonders and other town buildables take more turns... So if a normal game seems too quickly paced, try out the epic.
I'm not sure what to say about the difficulty getting into the game... I've played all the Civs to date, lots of Civ 1, and lots of Civ3 and it's expansions.... I thought the tutorial was crap to be honest, but that is an experienced player trying to glean something new from it. I thought it...

Yeah the manual states that you will only find workers or settlers on difficulty of warlord (one easier than noble) or lower. So if you start on the default difficulty, you will never see a worker/settler out of a goody hut.
