I've been coming around to Bismarck lately. I started to look closely at all the factors in choosing a civ and Mining + Hunting are the two best starting techs. You get a scout (which I've also come to appreciate!) and, well.. mining!

I do not consider myself to be a Civ expert by any stretch, so all I can do is impart what *I* would do in this situation... and that is, let the captial get those. The capital expands pretty quick (especially with wonders) so I wouldn't bother putting another city too close given the overlap...

I updated my graphic drivers (even though they weren't terrible out of date) and dumbed down my in-game graphic options as much as I could. There was a little improvement, but overall I'm just not impressive with the graphic fluidity of this game. It's choppy and feels like I'm playing an MMORPG...
I'm having this problem too. After a few turns when i've got 2 or 3 units on the screen, the game really slows down and is extremely frustrating to play.
What I find odd is that I've got 2.8G processor, 768MB of ram and a Radeon 9200 graphic card.
