How do you typically open the game?

Play on Emperor: Usually go scout>builder.

    Game Loss

First Civ 6 game I played, as Teddy on Prince (I play emperor now). Continents map which is my usual. Scythia overrun her continent then won with religion. I don't remember how close I was to my cultural victory at the time.

    City state theorycrafting/ranking

Thanks for the replies so far. I edited the OP to reflect on Stockholm giving GPP for every district; which is pretty amazing, and will become an envoy target for me in most if not all games. Next time I'm playing a game where it makes sense to become the suzerian of Hong Kong for projects I'll...

    City state theorycrafting/ranking

I'd loathe to call this a guide, because I'm not good enough to be an authority on this game, but I thought it might be fun to look at and rank the city states in each category. Cultural: 1. Kumasi: Trade routes to any city state generate +2 culture and +1 gold for each district in the origin...

    No peace agreement is acceptable

One time I had an issue with this. I stole a settler from Japan and did nothing else but attack his embarked units (island map, king difficulty, pre-fall patch). Could never get a peace deal and was getting in big trouble with war wariness.

    Policy tips

Thanks for the replies so far :). One thing I normally do, even if not playing a culture game or religious game, is to dip into Mysticism generally right after I get Political Philosophy to get Great Scientist Points. Is that worth a card spot usually, or are you using wildcard slots for...

    Policy tips

I'm looking for general strategies with the Civic tree. I'm an Emperor player at the moment. I get going for better governments, and a couple of the important policies*, but I often find myself lost at where to go next. Hopefully this isn't too vague, and I realize many tips may be victory...

How important is a religion for non-religious victories?

I have a related question. I play on Emperor for what it's worth: If I'm not playing for a religion I usually go for the God King policy just to get the pantheon. Is that a good strat vs using urban planning then whatever better policy cards you unlock?

Mounted units! What are they good for? aka why mounted units have been sidelined

Sipahis are ridiculous. I like the faster lancers than cavalry to do the cleanup/support tasks, pilliaging (obviously), hitting isolated wounded units, siege units, great generals and settlers that aren't immediately around the city I'm attacking. You can take a city and withdraw them, or touch...

Tips for expanding and building new cities

Settling near new (to you) luxuries is always a good option for happiness. If you aren't on the coast already, that's another option, but kind of depends on your map (although even on a Pangea I'd like the option of finding people with boats). You'll want to settle close to your capital/existing...

    Early Siege units

I prefer a couple/few melee units (soaking up damage, taking the city), a few/lots of archers (anti-personnel), and a couple/few early siege weapons than spamming archers. Are you playing vanilla or G+K? Dropping the iron requirement and adding the bonus vs cities (that wasn't in vanilla...

Cruelest things that you have done

Don't know if this is cruel or just cheesy: I was in a war and couldn't take my AI opponent's capital, which happened to share borders with me, so I maneuvered a great general right next to his capital, popped a citadel; and got a peace treaty. Within ten turns, I had four cannons within range...
