Why are aircraft not available after researching the technology? Other civs have it. I end up developing it and never am able to build an aircraft, also some types of armor.

I'm new to the civ games. This has probably been brought up a thousand times before. How can I increase the length of the game? Is there a setting or a file mod that I can do to make it last longer? Thanks
