Yeah, pretty much so. In Long War the aliens take the initiative quite a bit more often though.

Of course one can continue after that, but the game is considerably harder without completing the Slingshot campaign - I'd say EW was designed to be played with Slingshot while EU wasn't (in terms of balance). I decided to end that game there and started another one which I just finished...

This "train doesn't leave" bug is much more serious than I previously thought. Had it happen again and this time the unit in question was a Sniper, not a MEC. So that's another Ironman save ruined by it.

Well, there's some implicit boundary below which losses are acceptable w/o endangering the whole game. It could be lower now; I don't really know as I tend to either lose the game very early or build enough momentum to go all the way through. In my "no MECs" playthrough I did lose 3 Colonels...

Have you some support for this claim? I've at times suspected that some non-AI aspects of the game adjust to player performance (for example getting "new recruit" council missions after suffering heavy casualties), but I don't have nearly enough data to back that up.

I've played many street racing games and I'm pretty sure XCOM AI isn't a rubberband one. Well, of course there's the fact that I've been getting better at this game during the past year, but even when trying to account for that, I'm really not sure C/I is harder than before. Of course there is...

UFO: Enemy Unknown, remake by Firaxis

Decided to try I/I once more; now for the first time in EW. I think it's just brutal. While it's been hard to believe C/I is supposed to be harder now, it's easy to believe I/I is. Using the kind of strategies I'm used to with C/I, I was finished by mid-April. Might have to give it a second...

I have tried that at times, but it's quite hard direction. With capturing Muton there's the additional bonus that Muton Autopsy halves the research time of either rifle (and Plasma Rifle doesn't have significantly higher research cost than LPR.) I actually once managed to bypass lasers even with...

Completed the "no MECs" game of EW. I'm now even more confident than before that MECs aren't worth going for. They're fun, but that's about it. -- This was the first game I completed with the Aiming Angles option. It worked pretty well; it's more balanced than Absolutely Critical, and most of...

Of course it's optimal, but there's a big difference between crucial and optimal. Not beelining eight satellites helps with the early game missions, though; you have more money and freedom for squad upgrades (in April, that is) which I believe helps a lot. In the big picture it may help even...

It's not crucial, at least not on Classic. I've never been able to do more than 5 satellites at the end of month 2, and I've beaten Classic/Ironman multiple times. In fact, in my current game I haven't even lost a single country yet (probably won't at all) and it's August already. I don't...

I only learned about the post-selection thing after it had been fixed (I consider it a bug). This was not about a transponder, but getting to the front of the train. I had all transponders in place, MEC in front and 2 or 3 turns remaining at that time. The train didn't move so I assumed I had to...

Decided to try yet another playthrough with emphasis on quick alien base attack. Found out MECs can't activate the train in Slingshot #2. So happy.

Since all five units (in that scene) can't be killed during the Overwatch, I'm just trying to get a good deal of very likely hits to be able to finish the aliens off on the subsequent turn (though ITZ Sniper will of course take care of all remaining Drones, so you're probably right about the...

UFO: Enemy Unknown, remake by Firaxis

June is month 4, or did you mean something else? What I'm aiming at is a scenario like the one in the first room of the Temple Ship: A Drone wanders into sight Is (90%+) killed by whichever of the frontline Snapshotters is closer. A second Drone wanders into sight Is (90%+) killed by the...
