There seems to be more involved that just the two lua files. The values do make some changes, but not as expected.
I found one setting which gives 10% more river tiles, so maybe that will make your games more interesting.

For any changes in civ6 behavior, you need to identify exactly what you want to do, i.e., which units to capture. You talked about explorers, but civ6 does not have a unit named explorer. There are recon units which may be what you think of.

Just fyi, if you like spy actions, on epic each spy has 36 missions, versus 24 on standard and 16 on fast speed.
A bizarre action in epic, spies have more missions, but instead of missions taking 1 turn they take 9 turns. That wrecks the fun of spy operations.
Don't know about 5, but 4 had nice zoom AND world editor that worked well. 4 also had an info screen that showed the production of the other civs and a progress map, and and and....
Don't think I'll give marathon a spin. I'm just finishing epic game and surprised how weak the AI civs are. All I had to do is hunker down, possum, and put up a defensive line and then it was mostly over. They chased other civs and wore them out so I'm just in cleanup. It's like they forgot how...
Tried second fast game and it depends on RNG location and other than the initial mad AI rush, just goes quicker. At most fast is 1/3 a difficulty level jump in ancient era, after that it's the same old stuff, just faster progression. Just FYI.
Best you can do is go to menu/options and change mini map size. You can minimize and expand mini map at will.

Agreed, I can play diety, but perfer immortal as don't have to think as much. Just fyi, the mod that triggers religious unit attacks is the one that allows multiple religious buildings.
