I did this on monarch, Earth map, wiped out Germans (6-8 cities) and Greeks (they had 2 cities left only) before the gunpowder. I was at war since my first praetorian came out till gunpowder. Didn't rush them so much (researched some basic techs before iron) but it still worked. I won by space...
Good tips. But IMHO The Oracle is a must in higher difficulties. That free tech is the only way to keep up with the AI on emperor and above (in monarch it helps a lot but you can live without it depending on your strat).
I think Monarch is the way to go. The AI has a some tech/production advantage (and the start with a worker) but it can be countered with a good plan even if you make a mistake or two. In emperor you can't just lose a turn due to a mistake like forgeting to move a unit or researching the worong...
Hehehe. In my last game at monarch I was one of those not-so-great civs and won the space race while egypt (twice size as me) lost :) Thats the good thing about having labs in every city ;)

This is exactly what happends to me. I can beat the IA on monarch but on emperor the ultra fast building/training/researching IA hits me real hard. I usually play on the Earth map, but I'll try some of these advices as I was looking for an intermediate challenge between monarch and emperor...

Never had a single crash, never had any problems of any kind. I got to know that ATI issue here in the forums :P I think its because I still use the ATI catalyst 5.1 instead of the newer ones (after 5.1 that drivers are just crap)...
