Here's an interesting one: If the player you're sending your turn to has an accented character in their leader name, say like the é in Timothée, hmailserver can't handle it because of the non-standard character in the file attachment's name.
A couple of things:
I had to have "External to..." checked.
Gmail specific (but may be analogous to other smtp's...) - I needed to assign an "app password" for "hMailServer" in the gmail account I'm using. The generated password has 3 spaces between 4 sets of 4 numbers that need to be removed...
I can't believe you haven't gotten more likes for this. For years - well over a decade - I was spoilt to have an isp that allowed the in game smtp settings to work. Occasionally I would change out to a cheaper isp, and lose the ability, and every time I'd search for a way.
I've just done it...
Thanks civac, that sounds good. How does one join or initiate a game there?
Also: my version of Civ IV BtS is not Steam. I do, however, have Steam installed on my PC. Will this combination work for pitboss games?
Ok... Shall I set up a game, or you?
If your ISP or email provider has an accessable SMTP server you can set the game up to send turns from within the game. Most people don't seem to be able to do that, so send it manually.
My friend doesn't want to play - one game at a time is enough for him.
So, in preparation, I presume you're running the fully patched Civ IV - Beyond the Sword?
If no one else here expresses an interest within, say, a couple of days, we could get a game going. I'll ask my friend if he would like to play too.
Be prepared to be patient. One turn per day is a good turn rate, and it's often slower. What time zone/country are you in?
Yes, I've been playing PBEM continually for years, nay decades if you include Civ CtP :) These days I mainly play with a friend of mine, but I'm keen to play games with more human players in them.
