Civ 5 criticism – looking beyond the detail

I have yet to see someone complain that the ai is not offensive enough, rather that it is incompetent at offense. Opinions of different people tend to be different. Taken together, they are an incoherent mess, almost every time, on any issue. That alone doesn't make any of the opinions...

    Resurecting AI

They may insult you, but they will still vote for you when UN elections come up. (Montezuma was even "Hostile" with me, but still voted for me).

Thank you, now you have hurt my feelings. :(

    Cultural victory...your thoughts

Well, we seem to agree that cultural victory is usually faster than say, the space race. The problem I have with that is that it makes the space race (and other victories) so much harder. I find it almost impossible to build a space ship (tech up to the end of the tree, build two engines)...

    Cultural victory...your thoughts

They are a nice idea, but I find them too easy, especially in btS. Cultural victory is usually the first one I attempt when I move on to the next difficulty level (not that I have gotten very far, but still ;)). You can set the culture slider, assign artists, even PRODUCE culture ... add...

Rare photo: the elusive friendly Tokugawa

On a more constructive note, I have Gandhi seen declare war too, and you could even see it as a mean backstab. We were both on the western coast of the main continent of a terra map. East of us was the vast Carthaginian empire. We three formed the civilized Buddhist world. Beyond the...

Rare photo: the elusive friendly Tokugawa

 Random leader personalities? Did that really happen? (edit: nvm, didn't read the thread. i was so shocked i had to post at once)

I just DON'T GET combat tactics!

They don't pop up at random, the best defender against a given attacker is always chosen. Let's assume he has a crossbow and a pike. So if you attack with a knight, he defends with the pike. If you send a maceman, he defends with the crossbow instead. The same happens ofc if he attacks. For...

    Combat Questions

SCROLL through them? All I know is the mouse tooltip. Am I missing something? I find that you can defend much better in a fortress than in a city. If he brings enough artillery, city defenses are reduced to zero in (less than) a round. Cities are sitting ducks imo, when trebs are around...

Aggressive AI = The Real Civ?

Sorry, noob question. What is that "REX" you keep talking about? I wish to learn more about it, it sounds awesome.

    Most worthless unit?

Hehe, seems to be a tough discussion. For every useless unit that one brings up, there are two other posters that have actually found a use for it :)

National Epic plus...National Park or Globe Theater? (Also, an aside: improvements)

I tend to delay my national wonders, unable to decide where to build what. Wouldn't advise that of course :), on the contrary, build them as early as possible! So with that out of the way, I'd say GT+NE is usually the way to go, since the National Park comes ages later. I usually build...

Make random events more detailed & more elaborate

Hehe, yeah, especially if you run a theocracy ... You could make some Unit-promotions that are attainable by events only. For example, there could be a "holy war" event (again, if you run a theocracy, and are at war with someone of different religion), that gives some existing units the...
