My problem is that every time I try to open civilization IV, it will generally get past the loading and stuff and the second the physical game opens and right before the first logo-video starts to play, the game freezes and doesn't move. At this point I can't see my mouse, or hear anything on...

A lot of things happened to make my economy crash. First, I over-expanded before getting currency, with like four cities in 1,000 BC. I also wasn't near ANY rivers, and I didn't have any gold generating tiles really other than some dyes.
