Most powerful new civs in G&K?

Yep, you end up with a long, thin, roadless country. Citadels along the land border help a lot with defence, but at the expense of angering your neighbours. An offensive war with an inland neighbour is out of the question unless you out-tech the opponent. So my Carthage strategy is 1) Spam...

Avoid a Navy at your Peril

That would be great. Have your agent perform an 'infiltrate military hq' mission and see where all their units are!

    Love the new citadels

I loved citadels in vanilla, for aesthetic value (plus I play a bit of a porcing style, which they suit) but they were a bit rubbish. The new combination with culture bomb makes them devastating though. I had three GGs from my war with Denmark, and used them in a single move to totally...

Avoid a Navy at your Peril

Perhaps a Sonar Net building would redress the balance? Build it in a city and see naval units (including subs) up to 7 tiles away.

Most powerful new civs in G&K?

I've played a few games as Carthage, and the instant free harbour without having to research Compass is really good - if you spam settlers and spread out along a coastline you can have four or five trade connected cities within a few dozen turns and get all that money without having to pay for...

Avoid a Navy at your Peril

Against a human, I would give one of your bombers (assuming 3 promotions on build) Targeting III. Won't destroy a large navy, but might slow it down a bit, and can be used to pick off destroyers camping your ports.

Why spread your religion to another civilization?

If you conquer the city, you can use an inquisitor to wipe out the religion for good. I've only ever done this when the holy city was the last city of that religion, so I don't know if it would work if there were another follower city, but the 'This is the holy city of..' text was gone, and the...

Austria Review - Unique Abillity, highly exploitable?

How about a simple nerf - have the ability only available when you have Monarchy as an active policy, forcing Austria to rush Monarchy at the expense of other more useful policies. And have the ability disabled once any player reaches the Modern era? So the ability is just as powerful, but...

    Worst Unique Ability?

the thing about Sun Never Sets is that if you get England you are supposed to go big navally - rush Great Lighthouse so you get the +3 combination and you rule the oceans for the rest of the game. You then concentrate on sniping at coastal cities with a fleet of ships-of-the-line until you...

Civ V PBEM - at long last an actual game!

In case anyone was wondering - we're still going strong, 70 turns in!

Diplomatic victory... is it too easy?

Given the events in the real UN over the last week, perhaps the mechanism would be that CSes have to be "proposed" to be member states (all the player/AIs get a seat when it's built, but CSes don't), and that vote goes on the relationship of the proposer with the current members. So you have...

Civ V PBEM - at long last an actual game!

Five turns in, and all running smoothly. The only pain is again, that missing close button. The Alt-F4 trick works, but that exists Civ completely.

    Achievements- Does anyone care?

They're a godo way of encouraging you to break out from your comfort zone. I'm currently going through trying to get every civ's special achievement. Some are easy (Rome, Aztec) while some rely on getting a lucky situation (Japan) and some force you into situations that you might not normally...

Civ V PBEM - at long last an actual game!

So a couple of friends and I, long time Civ IV PBEMmers are having a go with the post-patch to see whether CivV works as a PBEM game. I'll record any thoughts and tips here. First thing to note is how nice the setup is for Hotseat mode. Much more pleasing on the eye than Civ IV PBEM mode...
