Depends on play style. I do large epic maps and up ai to 15 (from 10). Sometimes I do 14 and up city states to 28 (from 20). This encourages more struggles for land, which I like. I also tend to play water based maps.

I ahve done this before and I never hit any limit. The issue with a map that big is that many variables are based on map size. Reaserch is very slow and having a high effiecy rating also is less useful (both are based on mape size). Until orbital insertions, war is almost impossible as well...

There is an XP patch to fix this problem. Unfortunately I do not know where it is at. I will ask a friend to post the location for you though.

I never win by conquest. Once I get 66% of the land, I raze every city I take until I get 66% of the population and win by Domination. Even that gets boring. When you are going to win with your military, the game gets old real fast.

SMAC-X is not the way to go for epic games. The compuer can not play most of the new factions correctly and they are so easy to beat. That is my opinion (for what little it is worth).

When I load up a game and expect to win hands down, I move up a difficulty level. Winning with every type of victory just takes too long. I might finish 2 games a month (if I am playing more than I should).
