Thanks for the advice but I've got 1.5gb of RAM and a dual core CPU so internet streaming/playing an mp3 isn't going to have too much of an effect. The game runs fine, no graphics problem or anything like that - the sound issue is clearly something non-performance related as a program should...

When I run, Civ 4 or the Warlords expansion in Vista the program disables all sound on my machine during the load process. This includes if you run it in windowed mode and try to play an mp3 or listen to a radio station etc. When I quit the program, sound is restored to the machine again...
