As a general rule of thumb (especially for a beginner) try not to let your your science slider drop below 60% during early game expansion.

Agree also. I might prefer a restart over a slow painful death. I must say that I didn't consider the variant enough when making decisions in my initial set. This is my first game with raging barbarians and I didn't give it enough thought. Archery might have been a good idea earlier...
