a great problem: Persians are not arabs!

Yeah, he speaks french with a late 20th century accent. Shame, really. (Sorry, I thought this was a thread for nitpicking)

    City-states allies & war

If they capture another city, they will raze it. Proxy wars are fun! However, as you pointed out, when they get in a war because of you, their only good point is that they divert a huge part of your enemy's forces against them. Kinda meh.

I Think They Hide Diplomatic Because...

There is a fine distinction between an AI playing to win and an AI playing not to lose. Especially when you are weak, being able to survive because civ A (in this case me) decided you should (for a reason or another. We are human, not robots. In Diplomacy, I constantly went against the british...

Is the economy in Civ V to simplified?

Too soon, we are still getting accustomed to the new sizes of empires and how to specialize our cities. For now, it's about the same as VCiv4 when I started it. Not having the slider makes a huge difference :o

Japanese surrender and the end of the Pacific War

Of course it was entirely in the SCAP's hands. That is what frightened so much the Japanese and why they asked for guarantee. As you said, we covered it earlier. If this managed to confuse a journalist of the NY times, can you understand how it might have confused the Japanese? And don't...

Japanese surrender and the end of the Pacific War

*shrug* How should have I written it down so that you would have understood that I was summing up the words of a book I mentioned in the very same paragraph?

Japanese surrender and the end of the Pacific War

I did. Well, the part that was relevant to these small points anyway.

Japanese surrender and the end of the Pacific War

... That's called referencing, that's what you do in history. And it's really a good book, though a bit "old-written". And yes, Truman lied about it if you want to consider that unconditional surrender automatically meant the complete dismantlement of the imperial system. But was it really...

History questions not worth their own thread II

Maybe people still living in the thirties. Sport has been studied by historians for quite some time now. A long time ago (), I got to read a study of sport in Rome for my first year at university, to illustrate how historiography could cover basically any activity related to Man.

Japanese surrender and the end of the Pacific War

It looks beyond my ability to convince you otherwise and I suspect it might come from a misunderstanding about the vocabulary being used, but you might want to re-read Butow's "Japan's decision to surrender", he might be able to show you that Byrne's reply was actually an acceptation of the...

Japanese surrender and the end of the Pacific War

I can't see where you see the rejection. "From the moment of surrender the authority of the Emperor and the Japanese Government to rule the state shall be subject to the Supreme Commander of the Allied powers who will take such steps as he deems proper to effectuate the surrender terms. The...

Japanese surrender and the end of the Pacific War

Actually it is mentioned in the rescript of imperial court japanese that was broadcast on the 15th... though the official translation went with "structure of the Imperial state"...

Japanese surrender and the end of the Pacific War

I am not sure of which "rejection" you are talking about here... Byrne's reply was ambiguous, at best, and it took the leaflets to urge the emperor for a more decisive action, but already Shôwa's intervention of the 10th which broke the deadlock was basically him agreeing with the fact that the...

Japanese surrender and the end of the Pacific War

I indeed sounded as if the Japanese had directly asked terms to the US, which, as you pointed out is false. Sorry about that. However, the imperial intervention took place after Byrne's answer to the statement of August 10th which clearly said that the Japanese were ready to accept the Potsdam...

Japanese surrender and the end of the Pacific War

That's actually perfectly logical... the more opportunity to kill pows you have, the more kills you'll have. And as a veteran said once on TV "it's really, really hard not to shoot when you heard the screams of your wounded all night long" What? The ONE thing the Japanese hardliners wanted...
