Interestingly, I've never used an Explorer. In fact, I'm not really conceiving of a use for one. Maybe only on Huge maps ... ? I've only ever done Large.

Just finished my 2nd Emperor win today with a Diplomatic victory as Sumerians. Originally was going for the Spaceship, but changed my mind when I realized I could engineer a UN victory by getting everyone on board against Rome even though Mongols were my only (and not serious) competitor.

That was the point I had not considered, and which probably is the issue in my case. I have 3 luxes: 2 spices on my starting landmass, 1 wines in a captured town (from Ottomans), and 1 furs in another captured town (from the now-defunct Byzantines) - both of the latter on separate landmasses...
Is there an inherent value in playing a larger map - e.g., Standard versus Small? My current game is on a Small map (6 civs including my Vikings) and am wondering if I shouldn't have played a Standard map instead. Lots of Bonus tiles on the map overall, but not much in the way of Luxes...
