Old timer's, what are your thoughts so far?

Civ 1 (as a teenager) some time after it came out, but before Civ 2 came out. I'm not optimistic at this point. I found Civ V boring. There was a more fundamental change of direction than 1UPT -- up until Civ 4, the series gave players a sandbox of well-designed small mechanics, some very...

    No more 1UPT/"Support" units

I do wonder why they don't do Civ 1/2's trick -- allow you to put more than one on a tile if you like, but only one defends and if it loses the stack is routed. That way you can have your 1upt tactical battles if you like, but don't have to do the annoying piece-shuffle just to get your own...

    Sid Meier's Civilization VI announced!

Yay.... oh. It sounds like a Civilisation 5.1 from the screenshots and description. Incremental twiddling rather than revisiting the design the way they used to each time. Not keep on 1upt. Civ V's the only Civ that I've found to be just a bit too dull and dreary to finish games I've started...

BOTM98 - Justinian - Final Spoiler (game over)

So, I was much more careful about when to take Liberalism. As soon as another team started researching it, I switched to it and beat them to it, taking Fusion as my free tech :) It was fun in terms of being a quick care-free game. I don't think I optimised my progress much though, so I expect...

    BOTM98 - Justinian - First Spoiler (to 1AD)

No wars. Lots of settling -- running about 50% research rate. I got a bit complacent, and was beaten to the Oracle. I'll have to watch how late I leave it more carefully for Liberalism...

News: BOTM 98, Justinian, starts Jan 4

Given the next BOTM's apparently due out in just over a week's time, I'm ok with trying a quick game! :)

    Great news! Hooray!

    BOTM 97 - Frederick - Final Spoiler

Well, we were going to land fantastically early on Alpha Centuri, but then we realised that the different atmosphere might affect the baking, and had to wait a few centuries while perfecting a truly interstellar apple strudel. 1920ish.

    Future of Civ4 GOTMs

Can you log the number of downloads, and then in the results include a line at the bottom "plus ## unsubmitted games"? Though it's certainly possible to submit unfinished games and losses, human nature tends to be that people don't want to advertise their disasters too widely! :)

BOTM 96 Final Spoiler -Game over or abandoned

Expand. Expand. Expand (for far too long). Short war. Vassal. AP win.

    Future of Civ4 GOTMs

A few random ideas - for the low-participation games, don't require the HOF mod. I realise that's controversial, but a complicated set-up (not sure what it is for Vanilla, but for BTS on Steam it involves downloading a special "unpatched" version of the game, not being put off by the...

News: BOTM 95, No Espionage, starts October 15

Looking at the coastal PH seems interesting (if there's some seafood about). Sending the scout into the fog just south of it would involve picking up the hut before settling -- does that affect the results from the hut?

News: BOTM 91 Results and Congratulations

Though I didn't finish it, I did find this one of the most fun xOTM experiences I've played in. Good idea, well executed. Having it be hard was fine -- it was quite fun to have a game that was "too hard" at Monarch.

BOTM 91 (Bilbo) - Final Spoiler

Main problem I faced was discovering that Sauron and Saruman voluntarily vassaled up to Denethor, just after he'd vassaled the elves. So I had the strange prospect of half of Middle Earth saying "If you want to pick on our poor little buddy Sauron, you'll have to come through us first"...

BOTM 91 (Bilbo) - First Spoiler

First time I've lost a city to barbs. And an awful lot of 90%+ battles against barbs ... for awful lot probably read "3", but when properly adjusted for frustration and general curmudgeonliness that comes to a good round thousand. The hobbits are surrounded by strangely neutral-looking faces...
