OK, I installed the patches, but now whenever I try to start the game, it says "error loading shader libraries." Fix? (It started just fine before the patches)

I recently installed Civ IV (no expansion) on my laptop (my disc 2 was scratched to hell so I had to borrow a friend's disc). I tried to update to patch 1.74 both through Civ's menu and by manually downloading and installing the patch. Neither worked. The first gave me a message of 0/-1 bytes...
