I like to have complete control over things, so I never automate them unless I use the "build trade network" option, which is useful. I think it's essential to control them in order to move up levels.

Mali. They're the most well rounded civ in the game without forcing me into a specific strategy or into bad habits like the Incas do. Their UU is an awesome defender, awesome rusher and an awesome barb killer and their UB synergizes so well with Financial. I love all of the African civs though.
