My first successful leaderhead attempt: Menelik II of Ethiopia. This guy tried to modernize Ethiopia and resist European colonial expansion. He fought a war against Italy, and won, crushing them at the Battle of Adwa, which is depicted in his background. Because he had reorganized his armies to be more modern and correctly predicted the imperial drive of the Europeans, he kept Ethiopia free (at least until Mussolini).
