Pillars of Ashoka 1

Around 200BC, Ashoka tired of war and got religion. He then erected stone columns incribed with Buddhist/Jainist laws and philosophy. They had either seated lions or elephants on top. These were the only wondrous monuments in ancient India until Gupta temple-building in 600AD.
