JANUARY 1517, EUROPE

Christoph Columbus journey in 1492 has changed the European view of the world. Instead of finding a direct seaway to the markets of India, the Genoese navigator and explorer has discovered a new continent. Indigenous people, who thought the people from the sea were gods welcomed the Europeans without suspecting that they weren't comming in peace. Rumours of large amounts of riches allured more and more adventurerers from Europe into the New World. The local population didn't have a chance against the invaders and were often massacred or enslaved.

At the beginning of the 16th century Europe stepped into a new age. While during the medieval age the Catholic Church was a firmly anchored instance in the life of the people, more and more from nobles to ordinary population started questioning the Catholic Church and in particular the papal authority. A new movement has grown in the previous years and tried to reform the church. First time in history, the Catholic Church stands in front of a real threat which could break their power one for all.

The Ottomans have used them first time during the siege of Constantinople in 1453; giant cannons who demolished the until then undestroyed Theodosian Walls. After the fall of Constantinople the black powder replaced bows, swords and shields on the battlefield. The time of feudal knights were over, modern armoured cavalry and infantry, equiped either with pikes or arquebusiers appeared and reformed the warfare. Further advances improved the siege weapons and made campaigns in enemy countries more effective.

The Caribbean had become an important center of European trade and colonization after Columbus' discovery of the New World in 1492. This attracted former sailors who joined pirate captains to loot European merchant ships, especially the Spanish treasure fleets, which where filled with tons of gold and silver. Piracy became a real threat for the European colonies in the Caribbean.
