First time postah, long-time readah!

Just curious if anyone else out there has experienced a marked slowing of Civ3 after installing the 1.21G patch? Nothing dramatic, just a 1-2 second lull between moves... but pronounced enough to inspire this posting. Seemed strange as the 1.17 patch which was, if memory serves, about the same size as the 1.21 patch, did't result in any chugging issues. FYI, I'm running a 600mhz G3 iMac with 512MB RAM with OS X 10.1.5 with nary a crash... bought the sucker about 5 minutes before the nifty new flatscreen iMac was unleashed. Ack.

Anyhoo, any folks out there experiencing like symptoms? Any out there know of any OS X system tweaks I can do to speed things up a little?

Counting the seconds til the fabled editor is finally released. Many many kudos to Brad for his diligence.

Yes, I've noticed the same thing. On my G4/450, even the very first turns take about 5 seconds to resolve - but I don't notice any difference later on once the turns get really long. I was putting it down to AI improvements resulting in the AI taking more time to 'think.'

They did increase the recommended RAM to 128 inorder to keep the mac version in-line w/ the PC version. I can't say I've noticed a real decrease in speed, but I upgraded to 512 MB from 288 MB just before the patch came out, so it seems all good to me. :)

Actually the only difference I've noticed so far for the speed is when reloding the game... it is slightly slower...

My system (G3/500/384 RAM) seems OK. Like Beamup, I haven't noticed the slow-downs that used to plague the industrial/modern eras. I don't play larger than standard maps anyway. Agree with the slightly longer loading times, but that's covered in threads elsewhere and is a 'feature'.

Let me preface this post by saying the use of quotes around the word Feature on the surface implies that one does not think that the slow down during game loading is really a justification for any feature. If I'm wrong about that inference then I do sincerely apologize.

However, the feature referred to above is simply the fact that game files are now compressed. Its extremely easy to save about 200 game files and then wonder why you can't open your email after your game, not noticing your hard drive is crammed full of 5 MB save files.

I simply wanted to point that out so there was no confusion. :king:

I think what he meant is that the slower load times aren't themselves the feature, but rather are a consequence of the feature.

Edit - I also think I might want to clarify what I said in my post above. As the game goes on, turns have always taken longer, up to minutes in the industrial era on a huge map, simply due to there being so much more stuff to process. I still observe this effect, but I do not notice it being any worse than it used to.
