A couple of problems

I just bought Civ IV yesterday and after completing the install and trying the tutuorial, I noticed a couple of problems. First of all, the faces of all the characters are not showing. All I see are eyes and mouths. The entire rest of their face is missing. Also, when I am zoomed in on the map screen everything is in black. I can see cities, units and resources, but I can't see the terrain at all. It is almost as though the fog of war were everywhere, but when I zoom out, I can see everything just fine. Is it supposed to be this way? From the way it looks, I wouldn't think so, because it doesn't look very good at all.

Anyway, I have a sony VAIO laptop computer, model number PCG-K25. Please let me know whatever other information anyone may require to assist me. I look forward to hearing back from someone. Thank you.

At least your tutorial runs Menkau-re.. I start the tutorial, the game says its going to restart it, and then it just sits on the desktop forever. Doesn't reload the game or anything. The real game works just fine though.

*bump*

Anyone have any ideas?

yes, if the forum search is working, check out "chesire cat" and/or "black terrain". you're not the first or only person to have this issue. unfortunately you're not going to like the solution. check out the "T & L" sticky on this page. this seems to be a standard problem that is hardware (vid card) related. there are some messy work-arounds, but you'll have to snoop around for those.

Unfortunately for me the regular game and the tutorial work the same for me. Neither one works properly.

Thanks for the input. I see that my video card is a Ratheon 345M, which is in about the mid-range of the list here. I'm still not sure how to fix the problem yet, but thanks anyway.
