A way of destroying enemy cities

I prefer to destroy and starve enemy cities rather than capture them. Let's go through this step-by-step:

- take a well-equipped army and bring some settlers with you.

- once you've spotted the enemy city, move in with your army and surround the city. Isolate it and fortify.

- tell your settlers to make forests all around the city.

- watch the city's population starve!

- when the city turns into a settler, kill him.

It's a strange method so no.
Something I will do when a city is defended by phalanx or musketeers and has citywalls, I surround it with my troops and occupy all squares that will give resources. In this way the enemy can't build anything and can't maintain their troops. Eventually one or no unit will be left to defend the city. Also I will try to destroy stuff in the city with diplo's, especially barracks and citywalls are nice when they're gone. ;)
Usually I will have this tactic at high levels when the AI manages to get citywalls very quickly and will defend their city with lots of defenders. I use this to get the capital and then I can induce riots in the other cities for less money. So get the capital this way which will be almost destroyed in the process, then buy the other well developed cities for cheap. I love this tactic. :)

That sounds a little bit excessive for such a little task.

If there is a really hard city (especially a long long way away) - tax at 100% for a couple of turns and incite a revolt.

(If city walls are a big problem, sabotage by diplomats usually knocks them down in only a couple of attempts - they seem particularly vulnerable to them.)

Oh yea again. You also don't sacrifice all your military so that you can use them to guard your new city.

(Nothing worse then taking a city with your last available unit and then losing your new city straight away.)

depends on the techs the AI tribe has - if equipped with some armor / battleships or just cannons 'maybe' it's 'no good idea'...! :D

THiS is THE tactic! most of the times i send up to 10 diplos at once into the city if in need and -boom- city walls are fallen, let the bombers or armor do the job.

i never in 13 years did try the 'capital tactic' ... - in 100s of civ.1 games i NEVER did realize (never did RTFM... ) that this (may) cause 'riots' or 'split of nation' - thanks for this hint! :goodjob:

Hello,
I'm a huge player of Civ1 and I must say the first tactic works but takes too much time.
And ALWAYS go for the capital!

Senario 1
You want a city that have a good defence and citywall and you are still in peace with that nation.
Build one diplomat and put it on a square where you ussually are no allowed to go.. before move the diplomat again, place a unit (whatever) and move the diplomat to another space. Do that until all squares are taken. Of course take squars that gives a lot of food and shields first. When the city is going down.. either take teh lat defending unit with heavey troops like Catapult, Canon etc.. or build those 4-5 diplomats it takes to destroy the citywall. Remember that a few unit doesn't care about citywall :mischief: artillery/robotics units.

Senario 2
You want a city that have a good defence and citywall and you are in war with that nation.
Build defence tropps and put them close to hte city you want to conquer, if there is mountains or hills nearby.. put them there in case the city you want have strong attack units those will die. Even a phalanx has a big chance to beat a tank if the phalanx is on a mountain and fortified (F)
Steal squares that gives food and shileds first.. and then do like Senario 1 and you have the city.

And like others has written, when the cpial has fallen.. the other cities it easy to buy. If you have no money.. sell buildings from taken cities and buy with that. Cities that are revolting is always MUCH cheaper.. go or wait for those :king:

Another interesting thing with buy cities... if the city cost more then 65535 you GET money when you buy a city.. try to buy a LARGE city from a country with lost of money..

I don't get what you are saying. If you pay more than 65535 gold for a city then you will get money back? I've never seen a city worth that much, although I don't try to buy them much.

I don't really like buying cities. It's not something that would happen in a real life war.

Opss sorry! I should of course have described that.. and explained it.

It was for a few years ago.. I played and noticed that when my civilization was bad.. low tech.. only one city.. and I visit a Aztec city.. a huge one.. think it was 28 with all buildings and they had lots of money.. so I sent a diplomat there.. and the city was so expensive.. I think if was 65535 but it could have been less.. maybe around 10000 it was... don't remember.. but I figured it out that it has to be a program error.. that if you go pass for exampl 10000 it goes around to -10000. so instead of paying 11000 or what the city cost.. I got that amount.. because it is a pogram error.. I will try get it again and put up the save files.. it is a fun thing hehehe.
did this mess it up even more or explain a little? I suck at explaining hehehe

So you get the city and 10,000 gold back? Nice! I'll have to try.

Yes that is correct :) I ended up playing a normal game  but I will test it again.
I'm pretty sure it is the same if you yourself save too much money over 10000 you lose verything and have to collect again.. there is a limit how much money you have until it get reset and you have to start over :crazyeye:

well - west germany did "buy" east germany...
with a little help from gorbachev and bush...

people are corrupt, they will always follow wealth - that's the idea behind 'buy a city'...

which civ.1 version
01...05?

Generally I take a "scorched earth" approach. I'll pillage everything around it, capture it, sell all improvements, and starve it to 1 or 2.

Here the AI will have to do 2 things:

1) Destroy the city.
or
2) Capture it and have it worthless since it is a skeleton of what it once was.

Can't you just change the name of any city you capture? And Lazarus Plus, haven't I seen you somewhere before? Maybe: www.mafiascum.net ?

I believe the limit for a treasury is $32000.
I did it once.

I have no idea why I went about doing that...
