It is written that the million point barrier is broken in duel (hall of fame). I figured I would see how high I could score, so I won a quick duel on deity with Kupe. I only scored a few hundred points. That’s not exactly close.

Thus, how do I maximize my score? Thank you.

By making a bigger, more developed empire. Usually the longer a game drags out the bigger your score. But what do you mean by "million point barrier" ?

As an example, compare these latest games I played. Fastest win ever I got in my usual setup, lowest ever score. (I only have 4 games in the hall of fame there because I did a reinstall about a week ago)

That was Civ IV Hall of Fame as in previous versions of Civ the earlier you won the game your score was increased by an exponential factor.

A bonus is applied to the winning player's score, commonly called the normalization or exponentiation or extrapolation formula, or victory score. The idea is to give the player exponential credit for winning quickly based on the time remaining before the end of the game in 2050 AD. This exponential credit has been described as "double for each remaining 10% of the game", so if you were to win on turn 350 out of 500 with 30% of the game remaining, you'd get three doublings or an 8x multiplier to the final score. This is the general idea but the real mechanics go much deeper.

Only certain thing are worth score. Mostly they include:
Number of cities owned
Number of wonders owned
Number of technologies researched
Number of civics researched

Therefore, maximizing score involves having nearly complete control of the globe and researching future techs/civic as many times as possible.
