How is it possible to get one civ advance in one turn with 1 scientist and 0% science?
Hi Jed,
This is very likely from one of my posts.... I phrase it that way to make it stick in people's minds. In almost every game I play, including GOTM 016, I typically do this beginning somewhere around industrialization, depending on the game. In effect, my Copernicus and INC are nice monuments for 20 to 40 turns as the extreme demand for Gold (RB/PRB Factories, Banks, Sewers, Superhighways, Mass Transits, Offshore Platforms, and Airports) outweighs the need for slider-generated science.
I think I'm going to make a special thread soon to collect links to things like this, to help people easily locate the threads of such strategies.
The answer to your question is:
by using freight, set up in a proper trade system. Your caravans/freight are delivered until you have piled up enough sciencefor the next advance. But the game will nt grant an advance due to freight delivery in mid term, so you must wait until the next turn. Naturally, you don't need science output to get the advance, since you already have it with freight. Therefore, max your taxes, cut science to 0, bump up luxuries to celebrate your cities, and change all scientists to taxmen... except one. Keep one scientist to ensure the game gives you the advance.
Presto! You have an advance with 0% science and one scientist. But it does take delivery of caravans/freight to generate the beakers of science...
Here are some links that Lucky posted a few weeks ago about the Power Democracy.
Here is a link to part of my "Power Fundamentalism" approach, which is a little easier than the full PD method (but still takes planning and some detailed management). This link focuses mainly on trade, as I figure most people already have a good handle on what a Fundy gov't can do in war

. It may surprise those that are not familiar with trade and city celebrations that a PD and PF gov't can generate the same science (no penalty), under a specific circumstance at a given game turn. But PF is still grossly inferior to PD, all other things being equal in a properly run empire.
PS, Don't try to do everything espoused by myself and others, all at once. I daresay all of us PD players (there's quite a few) did not start out playing PD. It took me along time just to get a democracy to
not collapse in the 1800's, LOL (at Deity). Now early ADs are usually my personal "target" for Democracy in games. And remember, there is no absolute "right" or "wrong" way to do things.... take what works for you & have fun with it

. But it's kindof cool to use one einstein for 10 turns in a row, and have 10 new advances!!
