Advice On Installing Buttons and Technology

I want some advice on adding buttons to Civ IV as I was thinking of doing my own modifications to it for private use. I can't really find any clear guides on how you install pre-created buttons into the game. Also the technology creation guides I have seen weren't really very clear to me. Could someone write some guides that address these issues please?
