Do AI Civs ever use Carriers (as in Aircraft Carriers)? Can't say I've ever seen it myself.

I don't think AI's use carriers in civ2, at least, I have never seen one. They did use them in Civ1, but not very often. Personally, I don't use them either. They are too expensive and hard to protect. And in civ2, there are very few occasions when you really need one to project airpower across long ocean areas. You don't need airpower if the AI has not reached that advance yet, and even if it has, Ageis Cruisers will protect your fleet while your cruisers or battleships empty out its coastal cities.

I've played quite a few games where the AI gets big empires and modern techs. A few times I've seen them build carriers, but they treat them like cruisers and don't seem to know anything about carrier air. Very disappointing if you've ever tried building a PacificWar scenario.

I guess its a weakness in the AI makeup. Probably the carriers are in the game for the benefit of the human players.

They used it against me once I believe, but they landed in the jungle and didn't really follow up anything so they were slaughtered. lo

Carriers are used as an offensive weapon by the AI, unfortunately. They do build them, given the right circumstances. And I have had them attack my cities as if they were a destroyer or cruiser. They just died quicker, LOL. Carriers will also be used for naval superiority (!!) at times, and lose against all but ancient ships. I've never seen one attack an AEGIS or Battleship, however, and don't think I've seen one attack a Cruiser.

I can't recall seeing the AI use airpower on carriers, but I do suspect that if the AI had an aircraft "out" that they would use the carrier for landing if need be. But there is no strategic use of carriers I have ever observed.

Cruise missiles and nukes are handled a special way (other threads talk about that) that seems to preclude their being deployed on ships. I've never observed a AI nuke deployed on a sub, either.
