Why can't the AI be more willing to trade fairly? AI civs ALWAYS trade with other AI civs and probably very fairly, but it is difficult to get them to trade fairly with me. It is EXTREMELY rare for me to get the AI to trade luxury for luxury, even if I'm on very good terms with them. They usually want at least two luxuries from me for just one from them. This is very aggrivating! There's absolutely no reason when two civ's are on Gracious terms why they wouldn't trade wines and furs for incense and ivory. In normal circumstances, they wouldn't only accept the trade if it was Wines for Incense, ivory, and 10 gold per turn.

redstang, the AI knows how many smilies you get (total in your empire) for each luxury it gives to you. This means that if you have 10 cities and no luxuries, you will get 10 smilies. If you have 10 cities, all possessing marketplaces, and 4 luxuries, giving you one more will give you 30 smilies. If the AI is only going to get 15 smilies, it is definately going to ask for at least one more luxury.

BTW, if you want to inhibit the trading among AI you can do this in the editor with the AI-AI trade bonus. Currently, the harder the level you play, the easier it is for AI to trade with each other. For instance, in the basic level (I think its chieftain?) the rate is 110, which means that when one AI offers another 100 gp, the receiving AI acts as if it is getting 110 gp. The higher the difficulty, the more 100gp's is worth (monarch level is 140).

This was done to help out the pitiful AI play. I guess it was easier to make trades easy rather than some of the other things that might have been done.

What the AI needs to realize is that selling something below its value can be better than not selling it at all. Now, I'm thankful I'm not the one who'll have to programme the routines to handle such judgements ...
