Just practising for the coming SG,I noticed
something weird.The Egyptian capital has
been moved. Also there is only one tile between
Thebes and Memphis.Always thought the AI
build their cities at least with 2 tiles between them.

That is weird  . I have never seen the AI ICS either.

Maybe you can try retiring and watch the replay.

My guess: They had only 1 city and one settler that was just produced, when another civ captured their capital. May be with 0 city count, the AI is programed to settle where ever they can, that should explain the ICS. Then, when they refound, it counts as a restart, so they get all of their free units. With the free units, they were able to recapture Thebes and eventually recover to build a nice empire.

Sounds reasonable. With only a Settler left, the AI indeed founds wherever he stands, even in the territory of another player.
And since they indeed get all starting units again in that case, it means they would have been able to retake Theben easily (if Cleo knew Warrior Code at that time, she would have gotten Archers).

The replay tells what happened.
My compliments to SJ Frank for the excellent analysis.
A simple question : respawn was off,how did the Egyptians
get those units to re-capture Thebes so fast?(Monarch game)
Couldn't be those few warriors.

Thebes captured by the Germans.

Memphis founded by the Egyptians.

Re-spawn may have been off, but if Egypt had already built a Settler from Thebes (not at all unlikely by 2830 - it got 2 tiles away by 2750) then re-spawn wouldn't be necessary. Founding the first city gets the bonus units, in fact expect Egypt to be a bit powerful in this game as they now have 2 sets of bonus units!

In 2750BC and contact with Germany and Scandinavia, Egypt for sure know both Warrior Code and Bronze Working. Even on Monarch, that results in 1 Archer and 2 Spears upon founding Memphis. Plus the Settler escort. And, Memphis' borders will have pushed back those of Thebes.
Germans had either an Archer, or a Warrior (maybe even a conscript) there.
