Aircraft Carriers

I think its more than 8. I know a transport can hold 8 people. I had an aircraft carrier in my last game that was carrying 11 units (6 planes {fighters, bombers, and helicopters} and 5 missles {Cruise and Nuclear}). I'm just worried that one day I'll run out of room and my poor plane will crash because its run out of fuel and has no where to go!

No limit? Wow. I could have sworn that it stopped at 15. That's the most I got in there at one time. The thing in that situation is that a plane landed, but it left it behind when the carrier moved. So there was this aircraft in sleep mode in the middle of the ocean while it's carrier moved away... Probably just me though, the rules.txt I was using had been modified quite a bit.

Nethog's Civ2 Ref Page does not have any number for carriers, but lists 8 as limit for Subs. Seems like there was a lot of testing of those things back in 2000...

I am positive it is more than eight. Fourteen sticks in my head as a high number that I have achieved, but I have probably stacked more than, this I just don't remember.

The official strategy guide says a carrier can carry 8 planes. However, if you are really into it, you can double up on that if you only use bombers. You have to be very carefull balancing takeoffs and landings, but it is possible. You have 8 bombers out on a mission and 8 on deck. next turn the 8 on deck takeoff before the 8 returning bombers land. I have only tried it once or twice in the dim past and I always messed it up and lost planes. So I have not really used carriers in the last 6 years or so. I prefer to use battleships and ageis cruisers. A carrier with a load of planes is just too expensive and vulnerable.

Edit for more info: The unit chart attached to the massive tech chart says carriers can carry 8 air or missile units.

Could you post a link? Would be quite interesting to see some of those charts.
Ahhh, the glorious days before Civ3...

Hmmm...I'm sure I carried more than eight around. I use carriers only if I have a convoy guarding them. Then they just head off to war together. I know I haven't messed with any game files. I haven't tried how many missles a sub can carry either. I'm wondering now if a carrier can carry 8 missles and 8 planes. That would make sense because then my earlier numbers in my second post would fit.

I love aircraft carriers and always build a few. Any combination of 8 planes and helicopters is the limit, but I have had as many as 30 cruise and nuclear missiles - together with a full complement planes - on a carrier.

As for subs, I am uncertain. I'd have to cheat to check - but again, I am confident I have had more than 8 missiles.

(Although something is telling me this was a scenario and not a standard CivII game).

Not sure but I'm wondering if the computer did'nt count the helicopters toward the unit limit since they can survive more than one turn outside a city, carrier, airbase ect. Essenly the computer realized you had a total of eight fighters, bombers, missles + some helicopters and chose to land your planes.

I tested it a bit now (on Civ2:ToT), and I was wrong:

Carriers can carry 20 air units (including missiles), subs can carry 8 missiles....
I got the same results from my test using MGE.

I did my test using cheat mode. Is it possible that cheat mode may give different results that actually building and using a carrier and planes would give?
