making a new unit with different stats is as easy as copypasta an existing unit and change the name. Graphically is harder.

Reskinning the vanilla units isn't really possible for the time being. Just take a look at the "Initial look at Nexus, 3D Art and reskinning" thread in the modding tutorials and reference section of this forum.
