seems this options gives nothing..I've tried anything to trade cities but none worked...

I've done it twice.

If you're engaged in a war and find yourself needing to take a break, sue for peace and demand a small city. If you're ~2 times as big and have grabbed a couple of their cities often you will get one (you may have to offer a little cash as an added incentive).

The great thing is that the new city will be of YOUR nationality. (I guess they didn't like being traded.)

Yes, I have tried to trade much for cities. It would be nice if you could trade them without going to war and threatening, and without trading one of your cities in return. There have been several instances where a stupid civ will put a city between two of mine or something along my road, and I would love to give them like 500-1000 gold for it depending on the strategic advantage. However, I have offered like 2000 just to test and it hasn't worked.

Well, I've offered 5000 and couldn't outright buy a city of size 3.
It really seems to matter how close the city is to the capital. In my latest game, I own an island. Russia found a small gap and put a city in it. I placed a city in a gap on their island and offered to trade.

Not only did they accept the trade, but they threw in spices and some gold. (I only threw the extra on because my advisor kept saying "I think this trade is acceptable".)

So really, I think the value of a city is so high, the only way you can trade for one in peacetime is by offering one back.

well i have like 30 cities and the English were back to 3 cities which 2 of them are encircled...they are sure to fall in the next 2-3 turns and i offer them a city and much money for peace and they dont want!!!

I gave a city away for free yesterday. It was founded by the Germans, culturally assimilated by me, and fought for fiercely between myself (Americans) and the Aztecs. It had traded hands like five times militarily, plus twice culturally by me. It was more of a pain than it was worth, and I didn't want to be at war any longer.

Thus, I gave it back to the Germans, whom I was allied with at the time, for free, creating a German buffer between the Aztecs and myself, and dragging the Germans into the war to boot. They promptly stomped on the Aztecs and took a couple of border cities, which in turn prompted the Aztecs to sue for peace. War over, everyone but the Aztecs happy. (I would soon get the option to reassimilate the city through culture, but I'd learned my lesson by this point and refused.)

Of course, the joke was eventually on me when the two of them ganged up and attacked me, but that's life, and it was several hundred years later. I was just pleased by the whole situation and my resolution of it.

I don't know. Seems to me if you have a city in the middle of a bunch of other civ's cities, it would be worth 5000 gold, and even probably 2000. They aren't that hard to create.

It can be done. I traded a useless island city for a small coastal city on a large continent I wanted to use as an over-seas base of operations. Of course, I also had to throw in a lot of goodies to go with it before the AI agreesd to the proposal.
I was already in a position to kick his butt, though, and that might have had some say on the matter. Later, he tried to take the city back by force, and I ended up making an alliance with every single nation on the Earth to wipe him out in a world war. He was soon destroyed. HA! HA! HA! I AM SUPREME!
Sorry - I've probebly been playing to long.

At one point I was defending a city that I'd built deep in French territory a hundred years before. (On top of the saltpeter deposits). The French had me surrounded and i was down to my last wounded musketman.

So, sure of losing the city on the next turn I went shopping around. The English (too far away to otherwise make trouble for me) offered two advances, a world map, and a small sum of gold. Boom great deal for me!

Me and the french were beating up on the russians, but after putting in the hard work of dismantling the russian army france decided to send a previously unseen fleet of cavalry to take those russian cities i've been lusting after.. I ended up asking for peace and 3 of his cities, but I gave him 2 of mine in return. I quickly retook the 2 I gave him the next turn and I gained 3 big cities without a fight.

I've never been able to buy a city though.
